In the world of artificial intelligence, major Chinese companies are often accused of resorting to distillation. However, ByteDance, known for being the creator of TikTok, has recently taken a stand against this practice. This choice comes with arguments that deserve close examination.
Distillation is a method that involves transferring knowledge from a "teacher" AI model to a "student" model. This allows for the creation of a model that is nearly as effective while significantly reducing the required work time. This technique was criticized during the release of DeepSeek R1 in January 2025 and more recently with the Kimi K3 model from Moonshoot. The criticism primarily comes from the United States, but even in China, distillation is sparking debates.
ByteDance's Position on Distillation
ByteDance has decided to distance itself from this practice. Reports indicate that Zhang Yiming, the founder of ByteDance, has instructed his teams not to use distillation to improve their artificial intelligence models.
During an internal meeting, Zhang Yiming emphasized the importance of a long-term vision for AI development. He stressed the need to defer immediate gratification and not to settle for results achieved by others to quickly climb the rankings.
Implications for Technological Development
ByteDance believes that while distillation may create the illusion of high performance, it undermines long-term technological development. The company argues that this practice hinders the establishment of a solid foundation for developing truly innovative AIs. Zhang Yiming has thus encouraged the Seed AI research team to prioritize long-term goals, even if it means forgoing certain immediate gains.
It remains to be seen whether this approach will be adopted by other Chinese AI giants, such as DeepSeek, Moonshot, or Alibaba's Qwen. ByteDance's decision could well influence the entire sector to rethink its strategies to promote sustainable innovation.
