The incident happened when the Cursor agent attempted to resolve an authentication issue in PocketOS's testing environment. Unfortunately, it deleted a Railway volume that it mistakenly considered temporary, using an inappropriate API key. This key, although intended for a minor task, allowed full access to the API, including destructive operations.
Jer Crane clarified that the operation lasted only nine seconds and that the backups were stored in the same location as the main data, which exacerbated the loss.

He made several mistakes, including storing an API key in a file accessible to the agent and not sufficiently separating the testing environment from production. Additionally, he did not have up-to-date external backups.

Jake Cooper, CEO of Railway, admitted the flaws in his platform and proposed strengthening safeguards. He also emphasized the importance of developing tools suited for a new generation of developers, who are often reluctant to read documentation or verify AI results.
However, criticisms have emerged regarding the lack of technical skills at PocketOS, highlighting the crucial importance of architectural safeguards when autonomous agents replace human developers.
Towards Strengthening Infrastructures
This incident has brought to light the divergences regarding the future of programming and the importance of infrastructure protections. Current safeguards primarily rely on textual instructions given to models, which may prove insufficient to protect a company's future.
Fortunately, thirty hours after the incident, Railway managed to restore all the lost data. Jer Crane has since called for improvements, including the implementation of out-of-band confirmation for destructive operations and the establishment of isolated backups.
