The proliferation of AI-generated content, such as deepfakes, poses a major challenge for online authenticity verification. An effective labeling system could have, for example, helped quickly identify the manipulated images of Pope Francis that recently circulated on the Internet.
Two promising technologies, SynthID and C2PA Content Credentials, are rapidly expanding and could be game-changers. These systems allow for the invisible marking of image, video, and audio files with information about their origin, thereby facilitating their identification.
During its I/O conference, Google announced the expansion of SynthID, an invisible watermarking system applied to content generated by its AI models. This initiative aims to enhance users' ability to verify the authenticity of images online.
The goal of these technologies is to counter deception caused by unlabelled AI content that can mislead. By making this content more traceable, SynthID and C2PA could provide increased transparency, which is essential for maintaining user trust in the information they consume online.
