Canva Launches Canva Craft, a Two-Step Image Generator

Canva launches Canva Craft, its first AI image model, accessible to all users. The tool relies on prior design planning, claims better control, and comes with security commitments as well as a roadmap for integration with agents.
Announced Security and Planned Integration with AI Agents
Canva specifies that its model includes moderation of inputs and outputs, privacy and security controls, and reporting tools. The company plans to open Canva Craft to agents via the Model Context Protocol. It also announces Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast variants, presented as more efficient. Furthermore, Canva Craft currently ranks fourth in the Design Arena ranking of AI image generators.
Immediate Access in Dream Lab for All Users
The model is available to all users globally. To try it out, users need to go through the three-dot option in the left menu of Canva, then select Dream Lab.
Two-Step Architecture and Targeted Uses
Canva Craft is based on a two-step process that plans the design before producing the image. According to Canva, this approach aims to provide greater precision, consistency, and control, particularly for complex visuals that require readable text and precise object placement. The model can generate images up to 2K and handles over 30 formats, for uses ranging from social media posts and marketing content to the production of realistic scenes, digital art, or environmental images.

Training Data and Positioning Against Giants
Canva states that it trained the model on millions of human-designed templates from its content library, which includes social media posts, presentations, infographics, and menus. In the Design Arena ranking, the GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst and Flare models, as well as OpenAI's GPT-Image-2, surpass Canva Craft, which Canva positions as a competitor to offerings from OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google. This is Canva's first AI image model, part of a strategy initiated earlier with the rollout of prompt-based editions in April and the introduction of layers on generated images.
