Anthropic Set to Surpass OpenAI
Anthropic, a company specializing in artificial intelligence, is having an exceptional year. It is on the verge of raising tens of billions of dollars in a funding round that could value the company at around $950 billion. This potential valuation would surpass that of OpenAI, which was valued at $854 billion during its funding round last March. Commercial clients are showing a growing preference for Claude, Anthropic's flagship product, over OpenAI's ChatGPT. A recent report indicates that Anthropic has quadrupled its market share since May 2025, thus outpacing OpenAI among commercial clients.
The Strategic Role of Cat Wu
Cat Wu, product lead for Claude Code and Cowork at Anthropic, plays a central role in this success. Since joining in August 2024, she has helped transform Claude from a simple chatbot into a sophisticated coding tool. Wu works closely with Boris Cherny, the creator of Claude Code, forming a duo often compared to "Batman and Robin" within the company. At the annual "Code with Claude" conference in San Francisco, Wu shared her vision for Anthropic's product strategy. She emphasizes that the company focuses on staying at the forefront of innovation, without being distracted by competition.
Wu explained that Anthropic's product strategy does not center on reacting to competitors' actions. She believes that focusing on competitors can slow down innovation, as it often leads to lagging behind in execution speed. Instead, the Anthropic team strives to remain at the cutting edge of AI exponentiality, concentrating on the continuous improvement of their models.
A Sustained Development Pace
Anthropic launched at least six new models last year and plans to maintain this pace. Wu hopes this cadence will continue, while emphasizing the safety and accessibility of new technologies. The company recently managed the secure deployment of Glasswing, illustrating its commitment to user safety. Wu highlighted that while future deployments may differ, the goal remains to make intelligence accessible to as many people as possible while ensuring secure management.
The Future of Work with AI
Wu also discussed the future of work, which may involve managing fleets of AI agents. She stresses the importance for managers to remain experts in their field to effectively oversee these agents. This management is compared to that of human teams, requiring a deep understanding of tasks and instructions. Wu explained that managing AI agents is similar to being a people manager, as it necessitates understanding why an agent made a mistake, whether the instruction was misinterpreted or poorly specified.
Reducing Teams and Increasing Productivity
Anthropic's long-term goal may be to reduce team sizes through the automation of tasks by AI agents. Wu hopes this will allow employees to focus on more interesting tasks, leaving repetitive duties to the agents. She expressed the idea that everyone could accomplish much more by eliminating boring tasks like answering emails, allowing them to concentrate on more creative and stimulating projects.
Towards Proactive AI
In the coming months, Wu is particularly excited about the development of proactive AI. Anthropic is working on features that will enable Claude to understand users' tasks and automate some of them proactively. Wu described this evolution as the next big step, where Claude could anticipate users' needs and implement automations without direct intervention, transitioning from synchronous development to automated routines, such as managing customer support tickets.
