In the tech world, groups of former employees have often made their mark by creating influential companies. Today, an "OpenAI mafia" is taking shape, composed of former employees of the creator of ChatGPT. Among them, Dario Amodei stands out particularly. After leaving OpenAI in 2020 due to a divergence in vision, Amodei founded Anthropic, a company positioning itself as a serious competitor with its chatbot Claude.
Although Claude does not yet have the same number of users as ChatGPT, which is approaching a billion active users per week, Anthropic could well become a major player in artificial intelligence. Claude's language models rival those of OpenAI, and Anthropic's strategy, focused on enterprise productivity, seems to be paying off. According to reports from the Wall Street Journal and CNBC, the startup is on track to generate $10.9 billion in revenue in the second quarter, surpassing its annual revenue for 2025. In the first quarter of 2026, Anthropic had already generated $4.8 billion in revenue. This growth could even allow Anthropic to record profits for the first time, unlike OpenAI, which continues to incur losses.
Valuation and Future Prospects
Anthropic is not just competing on financial performance. The startup could also surpass OpenAI in terms of valuation. Currently, OpenAI is valued at over $850 billion. However, Anthropic is in talks with investors for a new funding round that could value the company at $900 billion.
This strong revenue growth and the potential new valuation reflect Dario Amodei's strategic vision. Since his departure from OpenAI, Amodei has successfully directed Anthropic towards a more productive niche, unlike ChatGPT, which primarily targets the general public. This approach could well make Anthropic an indispensable leader in the field of artificial intelligence.
