Elon Musk Criticized After Firing xAI Engineer

Devin Kim, a former engineer at xAI, has recently filed a lawsuit in California against Elon Musk's company, claiming he was wrongfully terminated for attempting to enhance artificial intelligence security. Kim, now leading a think tank focused on AI safety, accuses xAI and its parent company SpaceX of retaliation after raising concerns about Grok, a controversial image generation tool.

Kim's lawsuit coincides with a report from a Canadian oversight body that criticizes Grok for violating privacy laws. The tool allegedly enables the creation and sharing of sexual deepfakes without the consent of the individuals involved. Kim claims that his attempts to alert his superiors about these risks were ignored, particularly by Jimmy Ba, co-founder of xAI.

Kim had regularly warned his superiors that AI security was not being treated as a priority within xAI. According to him, this situation exposed the company to serious risks, ranging from discriminatory content to the dissemination of information that could facilitate the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

Recruited in 2024, Kim quickly rose through the ranks to hold a strategic position. He asserts that Elon Musk initially expressed a desire to implement rigorous security procedures, but that his efforts were thwarted. Kim claims he was terminated last September, just before a crucial presentation on AI security. He is seeking damages, the amount of which has not been specified.

This case is part of a series of controversies surrounding Elon Musk's companies, particularly regarding employee safety and the reliability of AI technologies. Grok has already faced criticism for generating altered sexual images, including content involving children. According to the Center for Countering Digital Hate, nearly 23,000 sexual images were reportedly produced in eleven days, between December and January. Some of this content is said to have been created from photographs of women used without their permission.

In response to these criticisms, Elon Musk has denied any knowledge of Grok generating images of naked minors. In response to regulatory pressures, xAI restricted the image generation capabilities of its chatbot earlier this year.
