A Bold Cost-Saving Strategy at Foyer

Foyer, a startup specializing in AI-based navigation tools, has adopted an innovative approach to reduce its operational costs. CEO Pratyush Rai and CTO Siddhartha Saxena have implemented a strategy that provides each employee with a personal account at OpenAI and Anthropic. This method allows the company to save approximately $30,000 each month by avoiding expensive enterprise plans.

Foyer, which is developing an AI-based navigation tool along with a companion app, has chosen not to subscribe to costly enterprise plans. Instead, the startup pays for each employee to have their own personal account, significantly reducing monthly bills. In fact, the total bill for the individual accounts at Anthropic and OpenAI for Foyer's 25 employees amounts to about $3,000, compared to an estimated $30,000 to $40,000 for enterprise plans based on API usage.

Cost-Effective Pricing and Internal Transformation

The uniqueness of the individual plans from OpenAI and Anthropic lies in their pricing, which is based on the number of tokens that measure the AI's inputs and outputs. Saxena explained that an enterprise account would have cost $4,000 for Codex in April, while his individual plan at $200 was sufficient to cover all his needs, which he considers a true blessing.

This strategy has allowed Foyer to significantly reorganize its team. Once composed of around 20 people to manage the Merlin AI browser extension, which had 900,000 users on Chrome, the team is now reduced to three developers thanks to AI coding tools. This reorganization has also enabled the development of Thine, an app that records ambient audio via a smartphone, allowing users to delegate mundane tasks to an AI system.

Foyer has raised $8 million in funding, which has facilitated this transformation and supported the development of new technologies.

Flexibility and Future Prospects

While individual plans are more economical, enterprise options offer additional benefits such as enhanced security and governance. A spokesperson for Anthropic emphasized that while small teams can function well with individual plans, companies often choose enterprise options for increased security and better visibility.

Rai and Saxena appreciate the flexibility of individual plans, especially when new models are released. Rai is closely monitoring token prices as Anthropic and OpenAI move toward their respective IPOs. He hopes that improvements in semiconductors will continue to reduce the cost per token of language models, and that major AI providers will release more open-source models.

If token prices continue to fall, Foyer may not have to worry about the removal of subsidies for individual plans that currently assist the startup. A pay-as-you-go bill of $30,000 to $40,000 for using AI coding tools could drop to $2,000 or $3,000, which would also facilitate the development of Foyer's companion app, Thine.

Saxena revealed that thanks to improvements in coding tools, Foyer's token usage has increased by 100,000 times, highlighting the effectiveness of their current strategy. This innovative approach could inspire other startups to optimize their AI spending while remaining competitive in the market.
