The Phenomenon of Micro-Dramas and the Entry of Character.AI
Micro-dramas are becoming a true phenomenon in the world of digital entertainment. These short and captivating formats are attracting the attention of numerous companies, whether they are social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, or streaming services such as Peacock, Amazon Prime, and JioHotstar in India. All are looking to exploit this new trend to capture users' attention.
Character.AI, known for its platform where users can interact with personalized AI avatars, has decided to dive into this trend by creating its own micro-dramas. However, Character.AI's approach stands out due to a notable feature: users aged 18 and over have the opportunity to interact directly with the characters from these series, asking questions and participating in various scenarios.
A Diverse Offering of Micro-Dramas
To kick off its foray into micro-dramas, Character.AI has launched three distinct series. "Last Summer" is a romantic series that promises to explore the complexities of human relationships. "The Nighttime Game" falls into the horror genre, offering guaranteed thrills for adrenaline seekers. Finally, "Eden Fall" is inspired by survival narratives akin to The Hunger Games, immersing users in intense survival situations.
These series have been crafted using AI-based production tools. Character.AI ultimately envisions allowing users to create their own characters and series, thereby expanding the creative possibilities offered by the platform.
Towards a Democratization of Content Creation
A spokesperson for Character.AI explained to TechCrunch that the initial goal is to develop a studio-driven production model. This allows the Character.AI team to refine the format, improve production processes, and understand audience expectations regarding platform-native micro-dramas. In the long term, the ambition is to transform these learnings into accessible tools for creators, enabling users to produce their own series and share them with a global audience.
New Features to Enrich the User Experience
This initiative is part of a series of new features introduced by Character.AI, which has shifted its focus towards entertainment since last year. In April, the startup launched the Lorebook tool, allowing users to create world-building information that characters can use as a reference. Another feature, Books, offers the opportunity to immerse oneself in classic literary works and play roles within them.
Ongoing Experiments and Innovations
Character.AI has also announced the launch of new experimental features. Among them is c.ai FM, which allows for the creation of audio series, and c.ai Reads, dedicated to fiction creation. The audio series feature is currently being tested by select users as part of the c.ai Labs program, where professional writers explore the creation of serialized audio dramas.
An Audience Captivated by Innovation
The enthusiasm for these new forms of entertainment is palpable. According to Sensor Tower, users spent an average of over 950 minutes per month on Character.AI during the first half of 2026. This reflects the growing interest in interactive and immersive experiences, where artificial intelligence plays a central role in storytelling.
