ChatGPT: A Rapid Ascent but a Profitability Challenge
ChatGPT, the generative artificial intelligence tool developed by OpenAI, is on the verge of reaching a historic milestone with nearly one billion active users each week. This rapid growth makes it the fastest technology platform to reach this threshold. However, despite its increasing popularity, ChatGPT is not yet profitable. The free version of the chatbot remains the most widely used, posing an economic challenge for OpenAI.
To address this situation, OpenAI is considering monetizing the free version of ChatGPT as well as the more affordable ChatGPT Go subscription by integrating advertising. This strategy would generate revenue while continuing to provide benefits to users of the paid versions.
Promising Advertising Tests in the United States
In the United States, initial trials of integrated advertising within ChatGPT have yielded encouraging results. OpenAI anticipates a significant increase in its revenue from this new funding source. According to a report from Axios, OpenAI has informed its investors that it expects to generate $2.5 billion in advertising revenue by 2026. In the long term, the company projects that this revenue could reach $100 billion by 2030.
These projections are based on an estimate of 2.75 billion active users per week by the end of the decade. Advertising would allow OpenAI to capitalize on the growing user base, even if they do not pay for the service.
A Promising but Uncertain Financial Future
Currently, OpenAI can afford to continue losing money by offering ChatGPT for free while heavily investing in research and infrastructure. However, once advertising is fully deployed, it could become a substantial revenue source for the company.
It is important to note that this information is not yet official and should be taken with caution. These rumors circulate as OpenAI recently announced a fundraising round of $122 billion, bringing its valuation to $852 billion. The company is thus approaching a valuation of $1 trillion, making its IPO increasingly likely. To succeed in this phase, OpenAI will need to demonstrate the strength of its business model.
Advertising: An Opportunity for ChatGPT Users
For users of the free version of ChatGPT, the introduction of advertising could be good news. Axios reports suggest that OpenAI already has a plan to maintain this offering despite the increasing number of users worldwide. Through advertising, it is possible that free version users may benefit from more features or higher usage limits.
The main concern lies in the possibility that OpenAI could prioritize advertisers' interests over those of users. However, the company has already assured that advertisements on ChatGPT would have no influence on the AI's responses.
Currently, advertisements are only displayed in the United States, but OpenAI is considering rolling them out in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand as well. As ChatGPT approaches one billion active users per month, OpenAI continues to seek ways to monetize its service while keeping it accessible to all.
