Google and OpenAI: The AI Shopping Battle
Artificial intelligence dedicated to shopping is becoming a major strategic issue, as Google and OpenAI introduce new features to simplify purchases through their respective chatbots. Google recently announced a partnership with Gap Inc., allowing its AI assistant, Gemini, to facilitate clothing purchases at Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, and Athleta stores.
This partnership enables Gemini users to discover and purchase Gap products without leaving the chatbot. Like Walmart and Target, Gap will utilize Google's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), a standard designed to streamline purchases via AI assistants on participating retailers' websites. Transactions made through Gemini will use Google Pay, while Gap will handle shipping.
OpenAI Shifts Its Strategy
On its part, OpenAI has decided to abandon its integrated payment feature in ChatGPT, which had been launched a few months earlier. This decision follows disappointing sales results reported by some partners, as indicated by an executive from Walmart to Wired. OpenAI now plans to collaborate directly with retailers to develop their own applications within ChatGPT.
To enhance the user experience, OpenAI has introduced a new shopping interface in ChatGPT. This update allows users to visually compare products side by side, with detailed information on prices, reviews, and features. OpenAI claims to have improved the speed, relevance, and coverage of products in ChatGPT. This update is being rolled out for free, Go, Plus, and Pro ChatGPT users.
A Growing Trend
AI-assisted shopping is a growing trend, with retailers seeking to diversify ways to present their products beyond traditional search engines. However, questions remain about consumer acceptance of this method. As Google and OpenAI continue to refine their offerings, the future of AI shopping remains to be defined.
