ChatGPT Images 2.0: A Success in India
Since its launch last week, ChatGPT Images 2.0 has received an enthusiastic reception in India, becoming the largest user base for this new version, according to OpenAI. Designed to handle more complex requests, this update allows for the creation of detailed visuals, including precise text in multiple languages. In India, users are employing it to generate avatars, stylized portraits, and fantasy-themed images, showcasing rapid and creative adoption.
More Measured Global Response
Despite the excitement in India, data shared by Sensor Tower and Similarweb reveals a more moderate response globally. Downloads of the ChatGPT app increased by 11% week-over-week following the launch, but overall engagement remained limited, with only a 1% increase in daily active users and sessions. Additionally, Similarweb noted a modest 1.6% rise in global web traffic for ChatGPT during the same period.
Growth in Emerging Markets
Certain regions, particularly emerging markets like Pakistan, Vietnam, and Indonesia, have recorded significant increases in app downloads, with rises of up to 79% week-over-week. In India, approximately 5 million downloads occurred during the launch week, compared to around 2 million in the United States. While weekly growth has remained modest, Similarweb's data shows a 3.4% increase in daily active users in India during this period.
Creative and Personal Use in India
In India, ChatGPT Images 2.0 is widely used for personal expression. Users are creating studio-style portraits from everyday photos, social media-ready images, and imaginative visuals that place them at the center. OpenAI has noted that AI image tools are adopted differently across markets, with strong demand in emerging countries.
Context of Increased Competition
The launch of ChatGPT Images 2.0 comes amid growing competition in the field of AI image generation. Google’s Nano Banana model has also seen initial success in India, highlighting the importance of this market for image generation technologies. OpenAI has enhanced its model to provide better rendering of non-Latin texts, including Hindi and Bengali, and introduced new "reflection" capabilities that allow for refining results and generating multiple variations from a single request.
Indian users are experimenting with a wide range of formats, from fantastical newspaper covers to tarot-style visuals and fashion moodboards. They are also using the AI tool to restore old photos and create cinematic portrait collages, suggesting early trends toward more personal use.
