A New Era for Digital Health with ChatGPT
OpenAI has recently launched an innovative health feature integrated into ChatGPT, exclusively for American users. This new capability allows for the secure connection of Apple Health and other compatible medical records, giving ChatGPT the ability to analyze and contextualize users' health information. The goal is to provide personalized and informed advice based on personal health data. This feature was developed with feedback from early users, ensuring complete control over the data shared and its use by ChatGPT.
Every week, ChatGPT is consulted by over 300 million people for health-related questions. These inquiries range from interpreting lab results to preparing for medical appointments, understanding medical advice, and improving lifestyle habits. However, relevant information is often scattered across various patient portals, medical records, apps, and connected devices, making it difficult to obtain a coherent and actionable overview.
With user permission, ChatGPT can now access relevant information stored in the Health app. This allows for comparisons of new results with previous tests, summarizing changes since the last medical appointment, or exploring links between sleep, physical activity, and daily routines. This feature aims to reduce the need to gather, download, or repeatedly explain the same information, enabling users to feel better informed, ask more relevant questions, and take an active role in managing their health, while complementing the professional care they receive.
Continuous Improvement of Health Models
OpenAI is continuously striving to enhance the models that power health conversations in ChatGPT. The GPT-5.5 Instant model, available to all free users, has introduced advanced health intelligence. It is capable of handling complex details, clearly explaining health information, asking for missing contexts, and recognizing when professional intervention is necessary. The GPT-5.6 Sol model, on the other hand, offers even more robust performance for paying users, particularly on complex questions.
Data Privacy and Security
The Health feature of ChatGPT has been designed with a strong focus on data privacy and security. Connected medical records and Apple Health information, as well as the conversations that utilize them, are not used to train the base models or to target advertisements. The rollout of this feature has begun for ChatGPT users aged 18 and older in the United States, on web and iOS, in the Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. To access Health, simply open it from the ChatGPT sidebar. It is important to note that Health is not yet available in Codex.
Testimonials from Early Users
Early users of the Health feature have expressed satisfaction with ChatGPT's ability to transform fragmented medical histories into a comprehensible overview. For those suffering from multiple health issues, ChatGPT has been able to connect these elements into a clear timeline, explain medical terms in simple language, and create shareable summaries with healthcare professionals or personal trainers.
Seamless Integration into Daily Conversations
Earlier this year, OpenAI introduced a dedicated health experience for a select group of users. However, testing revealed that health questions often arose naturally in everyday conversations. For instance, when planning meals or searching for recipes, users wanted ChatGPT to consider food allergies or dietary restrictions. Approximately 70% of health-related conversations occurred outside the dedicated health experience.
In response to these observations, ChatGPT now allows users to let the AI draw on relevant connected information in Health without needing to start in the dedicated interface. With user permission, ChatGPT can integrate information such as medications, lab results, recent visits, sleep, and physical activity in the context of the user's goals and shared information.
Collaboration with Healthcare Professionals
To improve health models, OpenAI collaborates with hundreds of doctors around the world. These professionals help develop realistic health scenarios and detailed criteria to define what a solid response should accomplish. Evaluations focus on aspects such as accuracy, safety, communication, contextual awareness, completeness, and appropriate escalation. The GPT-5.6 model has outperformed GPT-5.5 on HealthBench Professional, an assessment of AI performance on complex health tasks.
Before the launch of Health, doctors extensively tested the feature in ChatGPT, contributing to measuring and improving the performance and safety of the models in real-world situations with connected health data. Despite these advancements, ChatGPT can still make mistakes and does not replace the judgment of qualified healthcare professionals. It is recommended to verify important information and discuss medical decisions with a healthcare provider.
How to Connect Your Health Information
Users can ask health questions in ChatGPT without connecting personal information. However, to fully leverage the Health feature, it is possible to connect Apple Health, compatible medical records from U.S. hospital systems, One Medical, or Function Health.
Connection Procedure
To connect your health information, open Health from the sidebar or the Plus menu in ChatGPT and select "Get Started." ChatGPT will guide you through the secure process of connecting your health information. Once connected, data synchronization will begin, which may take a few minutes. During this time, you can connect additional accounts or return later.
Using Wearable Devices
If you use a wearable device or a fitness or nutrition app that shares data with Apple Health, ensure that sharing is enabled. Once Apple Health is connected to ChatGPT, it can use the information available via Apple Health, when permitted. The available information varies by app and metric, and some proprietary scores may not be transferred.
