OpenAI Introduces Financial Management in ChatGPT
On May 15, 2026, OpenAI unveiled a new feature for ChatGPT, allowing users to manage their personal finances directly from the app. This innovation, currently in a testing phase for a select group in the United States, offers the ability to sync bank accounts, access a personalized financial dashboard, and ask contextual financial questions to ChatGPT. This launch marks a significant milestone in the evolution of OpenAI's AI capabilities.
Simplified and Centralized Financial Management
To activate this feature, users must navigate to the "Finances" tab in ChatGPT, accessible via the sidebar, and select the "Get Started" option. Another method is to type "@Finances, connect my accounts" in a conversation. The process of syncing bank accounts is facilitated by Plaid, a service that connects applications to banks, covering over 12,000 financial institutions, including giants like Schwab, Fidelity, Chase, Robinhood, American Express, and Capital One.
Once the accounts are synced, which typically takes a few minutes, the user can view a comprehensive dashboard of their financial situation. This dashboard includes information on portfolio status, spending, subscriptions, and upcoming payments. The tool is designed to adapt to the user's specific needs, taking into account contextual elements such as ongoing credits, savings goals, or planned purchases. This information is stored as "financial memories" to be reused in future interactions with ChatGPT. The "Thinking of GPT-5.5" version is used for these interactions, offering superior performance in managing complex financial tasks.
A Favorable Context for Launch
This new feature follows OpenAI's acquisition of the Hiro team, a startup specializing in personal finance management. OpenAI emphasizes that the context is ripe for this launch, with over 200 million people using ChatGPT each month for financial tasks such as budgeting, investment management, and future goal planning. Additionally, a partnership with Intuit is underway, aiming to integrate tax and credit analysis features into ChatGPT, thereby expanding its capabilities.
Gradual Rollout and Feedback
Currently available in "preview" mode for Pro subscribers in the United States, both on the web and iOS, the feature will gradually be extended to a broader audience. OpenAI plans to learn from initial feedback before offering it to Plus subscribers, with the goal of making it accessible to everyone. However, no launch date for Europe has been announced yet.
Protection and Privacy of Banking Data
Aware of the sensitivity of financial data, OpenAI has designed this feature with a focus on user privacy and control. While ChatGPT can access balances and transactions, it cannot see full account numbers or make changes. Users have the option to disable bank syncing at any time through the app settings, and synced data is deleted from OpenAI's systems within 30 days after disconnection. "Financial memories" can also be erased at any time, ensuring secure management of personal information.
