ChatGPT Loses Ground: Claude Soars by 452% in One Year

Three years ago, ChatGPT held a near-monopoly on generative AI, with a market share of over 80%. However, it is gradually being caught up by its main competitors. By May 2026, the OpenAI chatbot had dropped to a market share of 46.4%, according to data from Sensor Tower, which is based on the number of unique visitors per month on web and mobile.

Gemini, Google's AI, is on the rise. It had a market share of 6.4% in May 2024, but this has climbed to 27.7% by May 2026. “Google Gemini has gradually expanded its presence, particularly in Europe, the United States, Japan, and South Korea, thanks to strong integration with Android and broader distribution within the Google services ecosystem,” explains Sensor Tower.

As for Claude, it is now the third most used AI chatbot. Anthropic prioritizes productivity, making its products very popular among businesses and professionals. This year, Claude also saw a significant boost in popularity in the United States by rejecting the Pentagon's terms, while OpenAI signed a contract with the U.S. military. In 12 months, Claude recorded a growth of 452%, and its market share now exceeds 10%, even nearing 14% in the United States.

ChatGPT No Longer Dominates the AI Market

Although ChatGPT remains the most used AI chatbot in the world and no online service has reached a billion active users per month as quickly as OpenAI's, Sensor Tower data shows a shift towards a more competitive environment. These changes are attributed to “the structural reach of Gemini and the rapid adoption of Claude by professionals and highly motivated users.”

It is also important to note that in terms of performance, ChatGPT is already being surpassed by Claude at the time of writing this article. According to the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, Claude Fable, an AI from Anthropic, is currently the top-performing model, followed by Claude Opus 4.8, also offered by Anthropic.

Conclusion

ChatGPT falls below the 50% market share mark, while Gemini and Claude continue to gain popularity. Although ChatGPT remains the most popular chatbot, the market is no longer dominated by a single player.
