ChatGPT Prioritizes Summaries from Licensed Partners

ChatGPT Prioritizes Summaries from Licensed Partners
Key Takeaways
1ChatGPT integrates summaries provided by partners through a dedicated pipeline
2This content predominantly appears at the top of the results, according to an analysis of 1,000 cases
3Springer media is more visible on the web interface than via the API
Why it matters : The way ChatGPT selects and displays partner content influences the visibility of publishers and the diversity of sources consulted by users.

David Konitzny claims that a dedicated circuit would elevate summaries provided by partner media to the top of ChatGPT's responses. Entries from this stream would appear significantly more often in the top positions than raw excerpts from the web.

Promise of Visibility and Discrepancies Between Interface and API

OpenAI had promised its partners increased visibility in ChatGPT starting in 2024. Researchers in Hamburg found that media from Springer appeared much more frequently in the web interface of ChatGPT than through the API. However, even partners are not always correctly cited in the assistant. Regarding display, ranked lists show that summaries from partners account for 70% of entries in positions 1 to 3, compared to 23% in positions 7 to 10, out of a total of 1,000 cases analyzed.

A Distinct Stream Would Place Partner Content at the Top

A dedicated pipeline seems to integrate content from OpenAI's licensed partners into ChatGPT, prioritizing it over the rest of the web. In the results, this content appears at the top, ahead of all other sources. This pipeline delivers pre-generated summaries to partners, while ordinary web pages are presented as raw text excerpts.

Who Fuels This Pipeline and How It Is Identified

These elements were highlighted by the analysis of David Konitzny, GEO specialist at Peec AI. Among three configured news engines, only the one named "labrador" provides information in the "provider" field, which allowed for the identification of twelve publishers and forty-three domains, including Condé Nast, Hearst, Axel Springer, News Corp, Reuters, and AP. In addition to news, this pipeline also supplies ChatGPT with recipes, product tests, and buying guides from sites such as Allrecipes, Tom's Guide, and Welt.
