ChatGPT Returns to WhatsApp in Europe After EU Pressure
OpenAI has reactivated ChatGPT on WhatsApp, but only in the European Economic Area, which includes the 27 EU member states as well as Liechtenstein, Iceland, and Norway. Users can access the chatbot starting July 13, 2026, via the verified contact 1-800-CHATGPT (+1-800-242-8478), without needing an account. Text prompts, image uploads, voice messages, and image generation work in multiple languages.
When queried, the bot indicates that it operates on GPT-5.5. Given the precision of requests for image generation, these appear to be directed towards gpt-image-2. Users can also link their WhatsApp account to their ChatGPT account, allowing the chat to incorporate OpenAI's context and synchronize message history.
It is not yet entirely clear what the usage limits are without a link between accounts. OpenAI may also discreetly redirect requests to older, less costly models.
Meta had banned ChatGPT on WhatsApp on January 15, 2026, after changing its business rules. Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity were also excluded from the platform. Only Meta's AI assistant remained available. In June 2026, the European Commission ordered provisional measures forcing Meta to allow competitors to return for free. OpenAI is also launching ChatGPT on the Kakao messenger in South Korea and on Viber in other markets.
