ChatGPT Fully Integrates into Excel and Google Sheets

OpenAI has announced the general availability of ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets, following a beta phase that began in March 2026 for Excel and expanded to Google Sheets in April. This deployment, now accessible to all plans, is powered by GPT-5.5.

An Intelligent Assistant in Your Spreadsheets

The add-in integrates as a sidebar in Excel and Google Sheets, allowing for interaction in natural language with the open workbook. Among its features, ChatGPT can:

  • Create spreadsheets: It generates structured workbooks with formulas and formatting based on a text description, whether for budgets or dashboards.

  • Modify existing workbooks: The tool can read data, update cells, correct formulas, clean inconsistent data, and add scenario tabs as instructed.

  • Answer questions about the data: ChatGPT analyzes the content of workbooks and provides summaries, trends, or formula explanations in plain language.

  • Explain its actions: Before making any changes, it requests validation and specifies the affected cells.

  • Search for information on the web: The add-in can integrate external data directly into the spreadsheet.

  • Execute reusable workflows via Skills: Users can set up routines for recurring tasks.

The add-in also connects to applications linked to the user's ChatGPT account, such as Gmail, Stripe, or SharePoint, to enrich the spreadsheets.

Availability and Installation

The feature is available globally for all plans, including Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu, and K-12. In Excel, installation is done via the Microsoft Store or the ribbon. For Sheets, it is done through the Google Workspace Marketplace.

A connection with the OpenAI account is required. Conversations in the spreadsheet are isolated from the usual ChatGPT history, and memory is not available there. For Enterprise users, the add-in is disabled by default and can be activated by administrators, who can also restrict access through role-based controls in the workspace settings.

Current Limitations of the Add-in

Some advanced Excel features are not yet supported by ChatGPT, such as:

  • Office Scripts
  • Power Query
  • PivotTables
  • Data Validation
  • Named Ranges
  • Filter Segments
  • Timelines
  • VBA Automations

For very large workbooks, some datasets may exceed the tool's context capacity, resulting in partial outcomes.
