OpenAI announces a connection of ChatGPT to Epic records and a plugin providing access to official databases such as PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov. The publisher highlights evaluations conducted by physicians on safety and accuracy, as well as enterprise controls and activation conditions based on account types.
Responses deemed safe 99.1% of the time across 4,363 evaluations
Physicians evaluated ChatGPT when it operates with connected clinical context. Out of 4,363 evaluations covering 27 use cases, 99.1% of the responses were deemed safe. The cases included pre-visit reviews, timeline construction, treatment reviews, and transfer summaries. In another series of assessments conducted in two rounds on nuanced clinical questions based on large U.S. datasets, over 93% of the responses were rated as "good" or better for each of the five tested connected sources. Hundreds of physicians from 60 countries, 49 languages, and 26 specialties are participating in this work. They have already reviewed over 700,000 model responses based on real-world inspired scenarios. According to OpenAI, this feedback is used to measure and improve model behavior, and the company continues to invest in training and evaluation dedicated to healthcare.
Two modes of clinical use with Epic and the patient record
Healthcare institutions can link their Epic environments to ChatGPT to leverage authorized patient context. The integration offers two experiences: importing EHR context into ChatGPT to review history, identify changes, and prepare for consultations; and embedding ChatGPT directly into the record interface to provide assistance without leaving the workflow in supported deployments. Instead of manually sifting through notes, assessments, treatments, and reports, clinicians can query the tool about what has changed since the last visit, recent results to consider, potential prescription adjustments or specialist recommendations, as well as follow-ups and outstanding issues. ChatGPT then aggregates relevant elements from the authorized record, summarizes significant developments, and directs users to reference information, all while adhering to industry-specific controls and compliance requirements.
Nine official sources accessible via a dedicated plugin
A plugin consolidates connectors to nine public health repositories, including ClinicalTrials.gov, CMS Coverage, RxNorm, DailyMed, and PubMed. Access is structured by records, fields, identifiers, and versions, with a focus on recognized sources. This tool aims to compare and verify precise information without needing to navigate each site separately, whether it concerns trial inclusion criteria, drug identifiers, reimbursement policy versions, or provider sheets. OpenAI illustrates several scenarios: a research team using ClinicalTrials.gov to list recruiting trials and compare their criteria; a pharmacy team confirming, via DailyMed, the latest label and warnings for a product; or a population health team preparing a diabetes prevention program by consolidating literature, active trials, and Medicare coverage information into a sourced view.
Enterprise controls, HIPAA compliance, and business tools
ChatGPT for healthcare offers a structured framework designed for clinical, research, and administrative teams. This offering combines industry-specific features with enterprise control mechanisms, such as role-based access rights, single sign-on, and audit logging. Subject to signing an appropriate Business Associate Agreement, clients have the option to use ChatGPT Work, Codex, various applications, and plugins in a shared space to enable HIPAA-compliant workflows. The same framework can be utilized beyond direct care: clinical and business teams can generate reports, analyses, presentations, and plans, while technical teams leverage Codex to develop or enhance care and operations software. Plugins for Microsoft SharePoint, Google Drive, Salesforce, Slack, and other systems expand the available business context while maintaining existing permissions.
Access and activation based on user profiles
Clients of ChatGPT for healthcare are encouraged to ask their administrator to activate the EHR integration and the public data plugin. ChatGPT Enterprise clients must contact their OpenAI account team to confirm eligibility and configure their regulated workspace. In the United States, eligible individual clinicians with ChatGPT for Clinicians can install the public health data plugin, but the EHR integration is not offered to individual accounts. Organizations can start with the most useful components and gradually expand information coverage within a governed single space. At this stage, the offering enables the connection of electronic records and other industry data to ChatGPT via the Epic integration and the dedicated public databases plugin.
