OpenAI Enhances ChatGPT's Memory
OpenAI has recently updated its "Dreaming" memory system for ChatGPT, introducing a new way to save user information. Instead of storing isolated facts, ChatGPT now builds a coherent narrative profile. This profile is automatically organized into categories such as work, leisure, or travel, and is updated in the background without requiring explicit user requests.
This innovation aims to address the issue of outdated memories. For example, if a user returns from a trip, ChatGPT automatically adjusts the context of its recommendations, thus avoiding suggestions for a destination that has already been visited.
Improved Accuracy and Personalization
The enhancements made to the memory system have significantly increased ChatGPT's accuracy in retrieving facts. The success rate has risen from 41.5% in 2024 to 82.8% currently. Additionally, the consideration of personal preferences has seen its score jump from 31.4% to 71.3%.
OpenAI illustrates these improvements with a concrete example: if ChatGPT knows that a user is interested in wildlife photography and prefers quiet restaurants, it can create a personalized travel plan around these interests. For technical questions, such as camera accessory compatibility, the system relies on previous conversations to recommend appropriate products.
User Control Over Memories
Users now have the ability to view, correct, or add information to their memories via a new summary page. This page provides a quick overview of what ChatGPT knows about them, divided into categories like work, leisure, travel, or education. Users can adjust individual entries with options such as "Make a correction" or "Don't mention this anymore."
The conversation history and saved memories can be toggled on or off separately in the "Personalization" settings. Additional details are available in the memory FAQ.
From Note-Taking to Autonomous Memory
The original memory feature, launched in April 2024, only saved information explicitly stated by users. In April 2025, an initial version of Dreaming was introduced, capable of automatically processing conversation history. The current update replaces this setup with a more efficient and autonomous architecture.
This update is initially being rolled out to Plus and Pro users in the United States, with a rollout for free users expected in the coming weeks. OpenAI has been able to reduce the computational resources required by a factor of five, making this advancement possible.
