ChatGPT Voice: A Major Advancement for Voice Control

On July 23, 2026, OpenAI made headlines by announcing via a post on X the launch of ChatGPT Voice for desktop applications on macOS and Windows. This new feature allows users to control their computer by voice, integrating voice commands into tools like ChatGPT Work and Codex. Powered by GPT-Live technology, this innovation enables the assistant to "speak, listen, and coordinate work simultaneously," according to OpenAI.

The practical application of ChatGPT Voice is vast. Users can, for example, verbally ask the assistant to check their calendar, draft an email, or prepare a meeting. In addition to these tasks, the voice assistant is capable of browsing websites and interacting with applications. During a demonstration aimed at developers, OpenAI showcased how the assistant can initiate a new discussion, open a pull request, and identify the source of a bug, all from a single voice command.

On macOS, a feature called Appshots allows ChatGPT to analyze the visible content on the screen, including certain accessibility elements like alternative descriptions. The desktop application is also designed to manage multiple folders within the same local project, providing increased flexibility for users.

Competition Intensifies with Anthropic

The introduction of GPT-Live on July 8 marked a turning point in the field of voice assistants. This model is based on a full-duplex architecture, allowing ChatGPT to listen and respond simultaneously while delegating more complex tasks to GPT-5.5. Until now, this technology was available on iOS, Android, and the web.

In response to this advancement, Anthropic is not standing still. On the same day, the company updated the voice mode of its assistant Claude. The Opus and Sonnet models have been added to Haiku, thereby expanding Claude's capabilities. The assistant can now interact with connected applications such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Notion, or Canva. However, unlike GPT-Live, Claude operates in turn-taking: it listens, then pauses before responding.

Availability and Access to ChatGPT Voice

ChatGPT Voice is currently accessible to users of the paid subscriptions Plus, Pro, Business, Edu, and Enterprise. The feature is available not only in the desktop application but also in Codex via OpenAI's iOS app. Through a remote access system, users can even control their computer from a smartphone. An Android version is in development and is expected to be launched soon.
