Christopher Nolan, the acclaimed director known for his innovative cinematic works, recently shared his thoughts on artificial intelligence (AI). As his latest film, "The Odyssey," continues to captivate audiences, Nolan expressed his astonishment at the growing skepticism towards AI, particularly among younger generations. He found it "rather encouraging" to see this widespread distrust.

In an interview with Hugo Travers, known for his YouTube channel HugoDécrypte, Nolan was invited to reflect on the Trojan horse analogy, a central element of his film. Travers suggested that AI could be seen as a seductive yet potentially dangerous gift, much like the legendary Trojan horse that concealed Greek invaders.

A Transparent Yet Worrisome Technology

Nolan humorously responded by comparing AI to a "Trojan horse that everyone knows the Greeks are inside." He described this technology as a "transparent horse, made of glass," thus highlighting the apparent yet deceptive transparency of AI. According to him, never has a technology advanced so rapidly while being so widely rejected by the public.

He noted that suspicion towards AI is particularly strong among the youth, who often react negatively to AI-generated content online. They even use derogatory terms to describe these creations, such as "disgusting AI," which, for Nolan, reflects a healthy skepticism.

A Call for Vigilance Regarding New Technologies

Nolan emphasized the importance of approaching new technologies with caution. While they may offer considerable benefits, it is crucial to remain vigilant about the intentions of those who develop them. For him, it is this distrust that allows us to make the most of innovations rather than accepting them blindly. He added that the motivations of the people providing us with these technologies should also be scrutinized with skepticism.

Although he did not detail the specific threats posed by AI, Nolan acknowledged that this technology is increasingly raising concerns in Hollywood. It was indeed a central topic during the recent strikes by writers and actors in 2023. The Directors Guild of America, chaired by Nolan, successfully negotiated certain protections regarding generative AI in its latest agreement.

Between Tradition and Innovation

Nolan is known for his reluctance towards certain modern technologies, such as smartphones, and his attachment to traditional filmmaking methods. His latest film, "The Odyssey," is the first feature film entirely shot in Imax, illustrating his commitment to film as a medium.

When asked by the New York Times about his relationship with technology, Nolan described himself as a "techno-skeptic." He explained that his preference for film stems from its ability to better represent the human vision of the world compared to digital imaging systems. "Film is better at representing how the eye sees the world than any digital imaging system I've seen," he stated.

Nolan also highlighted that he regularly adopts new technologies, but he criticizes the trend of promoting them at the expense of still-valid systems. "New technologies tend to be sold to people at the expense of systems that could still be valid and viable," he said, warning against the risk of losing valuable techniques, like film, in the relentless pursuit of novelty.
