The creation of this startup stemmed from an observation: cities struggle to effectively manage the deterioration of their infrastructure. In response, City Detect developed computer vision technology combined with AI to help municipalities monitor and proactively address these issues.

An Innovative Monitoring System

City Detect's model relies on the installation of cameras on municipal vehicles, such as garbage trucks and street sweepers. These cameras capture images of surrounding buildings and infrastructure, which are then analyzed by computer vision algorithms. This approach is reminiscent of Google Maps Street View, but with a specific goal: to ensure that buildings meet safety and maintenance standards.

Currently, monitoring poorly maintained buildings largely relies on manual methods, which limits the effectiveness of interventions. Baum-Blake emphasizes that while human teams can monitor about 50 buildings per week, City Detect's technology allows for the inspection of thousands of structures in the same timeframe. This ability to process a large volume of data is a significant asset for municipalities.

Advanced Features for Better Management

The product developed by City Detect includes essential features, such as blurring faces and license plates to protect privacy. Additionally, the technology can distinguish street art from vandalism, helping governments make informed decisions about building maintenance. It also enables the detection of structural issues, such as storm damage.

Growing Presence in the United States

City Detect is already active in at least 17 cities, collaborating with local governments in major metropolitan areas such as Dallas and Miami. To date, the company has raised a total of $15 million and is a member of the GovAI Coalition, a group dedicated to AI governance. It is also certified compliant with the SOC 2 Type II standard, ensuring the protection of private data.

Commitment to AI Accountability

In response to concerns from local governments, City Detect has released an AI accountability policy. This initiative aims to clarify the company's commitments to its partners, ensuring complete transparency in the use of its technologies.

Future Prospects and Expansion

With this new funding, City Detect plans to hire more engineers to enhance its technologies, particularly those related to detecting storm damage. The company also aims to expand its presence across the United States, capitalizing on the efficiency gains observed in partner municipalities.
