The problem was initially reported by users on Reddit. It appears that the common denominator is the sharing of conversations, a common option in many AI chats. This feature allows "anyone with the link" to view the content of the Claude conversation, which led to indexing by search engines.

This sharing option is apparently not sufficiently protected against web crawlers. Thus, even if users initially shared their conversations with specific individuals, those conversations could be exposed to the entire Internet if someone knew where to look.

Sensitive Data Just a Click Away

The indexed conversations included sensitive information such as medical records, personal data, internal company information, and even explicit content. These conversations were accessible through a simple search on Google or Bing by adding "site:claude.ai/share" to the query, revealing a veritable treasure trove of data. Although most of these conversations have been removed, artifacts like tools, visualizations, and shareable applications remained available.

A Recurring Problem for Anthropic

This is not the first time Anthropic has faced such an issue. Last year, Forbes reported a similar incident where hundreds of conversations had been indexed by Google before being taken down.

A representative from Anthropic told CNET that the system was functioning as intended and that users who choose to share their conversations make them publicly accessible. "Shareable links are not guessable or discoverable unless people choose to share them themselves," he clarified. "Once a conversation is shared, it becomes public and can be archived by third-party services."

Technical Implications According to Glenn Gabe

Glenn Gabe, an SEO and AI research expert at G-Squared Interactive, explained to CNET the technical reasons behind this situation. It involves a robots.txt file, which is used to indicate to search engines whether they should crawl certain pages for indexing. Gabe emphasizes that some companies do not understand how Google and Bing handle URLs blocked by robots.txt, even though Google provides explanatory documentation on this.

"If you prevent Google or Bing from crawling your content, they can still index those URLs, but without crawling the content," Gabe explains. Without crawling, search engines cannot see the directives in the HTML. Gabe recommends that for public URLs like those of shared Claude chats, Anthropic should opt for a "no-index" strategy rather than blocking crawling via robots.txt. This way, the content would remain online but not indexed, and only those with the direct link could access it.
