Claude AI Paralyzed: Massive Outage for Thousands
Thousands of people were unable to access Claude AI for several hours on Wednesday, but the site appears to be returning to normal.
Claude, developed by Anthropic, is recovering from a major outage that occurred on Wednesday. The site experienced serious errors for part of the day, but reports of issues on DownDetector, which tracks service outages across various websites, have significantly decreased. Over 4,000 users had reported access problems with Claude, but by 3 PM, that number had dropped to around 150, suggesting that the outage was easing.
Claude's status page displays a message with a red border announcing "high errors across all models," but also notes that "we have observed a recovery in success rates across all models and are closely monitoring to ensure no further issues arise."
A representative from Anthropic told CNET via email: "We are aware that some users are experiencing errors on Claude.ai, Claude Code, and the Claude API. Our team is working to restore service, and we appreciate everyone's understanding as we resolve this."
CNET's attempts to access Claude earlier on Wednesday returned the following error message: "Due to unexpected capacity constraints, Claude is unable to respond to your message. Please try again soon." However, by 3:30 PM, Claude was functioning normally.
Claude's status page also indicated that the site had encountered errors on Monday concerning Claude Opus 5 and Haiku 4.5, although those errors were resolved that day, with Tuesday showing no errors. Claude Opus 5 is a powerful flagship AI model, while Haiku 4.5 is a faster and lighter model.
CNET has designated Claude as the best AI chatbot after reviewing all major AI tools, praising its consistency and noting that it is often seen as more work-focused than for general use. The developer Anthropic is a San Francisco-based company founded in 2021 by former employees of OpenAI, the company behind the popular chatbot ChatGPT.
