Claude Code adopts AGENTS.md to centralize guidelines
A single file can now carry the instructions for a project for AI coding agents. Claude Code has supported this natively since version 2.1.277, released in September 2026. This Markdown format is used as a working context and can be shared with other tools like OpenAI Codex and Cursor.
The AGENTS.md file loaded as context by Claude Code
When placed at the root of a project, the AGENTS.md file is used by Claude Code to provide the necessary context for its interventions. This method helps avoid repeating design preferences, technology stack, or accessibility requirements across different prompts or files. An example of an AGENTS.md file might include a section describing the project, such as a premium e-commerce site built with Next.js, as well as design principles like a minimalist visual style, an 8px spacing system, and the use of existing design tokens.
