The Challenge of an Already Solitary Job

Software development has traditionally been an activity often practiced alone. With the introduction of AI agents, this trend toward isolation has intensified. Fiona Fung, who oversees the Claude Code and Claude Cowork projects, has observed that the heavy use of these agents by engineers makes them even more isolated. "We noticed that in the Claude Code team, after a certain time, work became an increasingly solitary experience, as we were all absorbed in our interactions with the agents," she explained during an appearance on "Lenny's Podcast."

Initiatives to Strengthen Collaboration

To combat this isolation, Fung's team has implemented several initiatives aimed at recreating the spirit of collaboration that working with AI agents had begun to erode. They organized programming lunches, hackathons, and shared "creation time" sessions, allowing engineers to work together and learn from one another. "Everyone uses Claude Cowork, but each does it in their own way," Fung stated. "Pair programming allows us to learn a lot from each other."

Claude Code has quickly established itself as an essential tool in the field of software development. A survey conducted by Business Insider among numerous founders and venture capital investors revealed that Claude Code has become the go-to tool for startups, particularly for complex engineering tasks. Some founders consider this tool indispensable for their projects.

The Phenomenon of Vibecoding and Its Implications

Engineers are now spending more time directing agents, analyzing results, and orchestrating parallel tasks. The phenomenon of vibecoding, which involves using natural language to develop software, has enabled non-technical founders to create custom tools without needing to hire traditional engineering teams, giving rise to the concept of "solopreneur." However, this approach can reinforce isolation, and many founders emphasize the importance of collaboration. Fung noted that her team strives to create more opportunities for engineers to work together, even if each uses AI differently. "Every time I observe someone working, I also learn something," she concluded.
