Claude Code and Cowork: Anthropic's AI Takes Control of Your Office
Anthropic, a company specializing in artificial intelligence, has recently unveiled a new feature for its AI assistant, Claude. Now, Claude can take control of Mac and Windows desktops. This capability allows it to open applications, browse the web, and even fill out spreadsheets, transforming the user experience on these platforms.
This innovation is available as a research preview in the Claude Cowork and Claude Code applications. For now, it is limited to macOS users. This technological advancement is the result of Anthropic's recent acquisition of Vercept AI, a startup focused on AI-driven computer control.
Anthropic has also introduced a new feature called "Dispatch." This allows users to control their computer remotely, regardless of their location. This capability further expands the possibilities offered by Claude, making the AI more integrated into users' daily lives.
Update, April 3, 2026
The desktop control feature is now accessible to users of the Pro and Max versions of Claude Code and Claude Cowork on the Windows application. This update marks an important milestone in expanding Claude's capabilities beyond macOS.

Anthropic announced that Claude, its AI assistant, can now directly manage tasks on a user's computer. This capability includes actions that are typically performed manually at one's desk, such as opening programs or managing files.
According to information provided by Anthropic, Claude prioritizes the use of existing integrations such as Slack or connected calendars. It is only when these options are unavailable that Claude takes direct control of the desktop. This approach makes this feature a last resort rather than a standard practice.
This advancement represents a significant step for Anthropic in creating an AI agent capable of actively working within a user's digital environment, beyond mere text generation. Simultaneously, the "Dispatch" feature has been launched, allowing for remote desktop control, further enhancing the integration of AI into daily tasks.
Acquisition of Vercept AI: The Foundation of Desktop Control
Claude's ability to control the desktop is partly based on technology developed by Vercept AI, a startup acquired by Anthropic about four weeks ago. Vercept AI focuses on developing AI-powered computer control solutions. According to Kiana Ehsani, co-founder of Vercept AI, the team managed to launch its first product in less than four weeks after the acquisition by Anthropic.
Ehsani emphasizes that, contrary to initial fears, the acquisition did not slow down development. She attributes this success to Anthropic's corporate culture, where intelligence, humility, and mutual support are core values. According to her, these qualities constitute Anthropic's main competitive advantage.
The Full Use of Computers by AI Still Needs to Prove Itself
The question of the reliability and security of this new feature remains open. Allowing an AI to control an entire desktop raises significant concerns regarding data privacy, error rates, and controllability. Anthropic will likely need to address these issues before considering a large-scale deployment.
Similar features, limited to browsers, have yet to prove their reliability, as demonstrated by OpenAI's experience with its ChatGPT agent. Anthropic is taking a bold gamble by allowing full desktop control, which also increases the potential attack surface. This approach could transform interaction with computers, but it requires careful attention to security issues.
