Claude from Anthropic Encourages Sleep, Mystifying Its Users
The artificial intelligence Claude, developed by Anthropic, has recently astonished its users by suggesting they take a rest. This unusual behavior has led to much speculation on social media.
For several months, Claude users have reported that the chatbot advises them to "take a nap" or "go rest" after prolonged conversation sessions. The reasons behind this advice remain unclear, but several hypotheses have emerged.
Theories on Claude's Behavior
One theory suggests that Anthropic programmed Claude to promote user well-being, preventing them from developing an unhealthy dependency on the chatbot. Some users have compared this attitude to that of a protective parent.
"Claude's insistence on bedtime reminds me of my parents when I showed signs of irritability," commented a user on Reddit in February.
Sam McAllister, a staff member at Anthropic, described this behavior as a "little character quirk" in a post on X, adding that the company is aware of the issue and plans to address it in future models.
Timestamp Errors and Resource Management
Some users have speculated that Claude uses local timestamps to determine when to encourage rest, although this is often incorrect, as McAllister clarified. This feature can sometimes be "too nurturing."
Another, more pragmatic hypothesis is that Claude encourages users to end discussions to conserve computing resources. Claude's models have experienced several interruptions this year due to their growing popularity, particularly among developers.
Recently, Anthropic signed an agreement with Elon Musk's SpaceX to increase its computing capacity. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
Strange Behaviors of AIs
Claude's advice to go to bed adds to a list of strange behaviors observed in AIs. Earlier this year, OpenAI's ChatGPT had a tendency to talk about goblins until modifications were made to its source code.
In any case, Claude might be onto something: we probably all need more sleep.
