Anthropic, the AI-focused startup, recently unveiled a beta version of Claude for Word, a tool that could pose a significant challenge to Microsoft in the realm of word processing software. After integrating Claude into Excel and PowerPoint earlier this year, Anthropic is now targeting legal professionals with its latest addition, designed to facilitate legal review, financial memo drafting, and iterative editing.
The launch of Claude for Word was announced on Saturday, featuring capabilities that allow users to ask questions about their documents and receive answers accompanied by clickable citations. Among other notable features, the tool offers the ability to edit text while preserving the original style, numbering, and formatting. A "track changes" mode is also included, enabling users to accept or reject each proposed modification.
Claude for Word is also capable of managing comment threads, modifying the relevant text, and providing detailed responses regarding the changes made. Anthropic illustrated the use of this tool with examples of queries that lawyers might pose during contract reviews. For instance, Claude can summarize key business terms, highlight provisions that deviate from market standards, or address reviewers' comments as tracked changes.
This new feature is currently accessible only to subscribers of the Team and Enterprise plans. With this launch, Anthropic clearly demonstrates its ambition to be seen as more than just a tool for developers. The company aims for Claude to be integrated across all professional structures, supporting not only legal teams but also finance departments, human resources, analysts, and executives.
