Claude: Voice Mode Extended to Opus and Sonnet
Claude's voice mode is now available for the Opus and Sonnet models. Anthropic is also expanding access to voice mode for applications such as Gmail and Slack.
Until now, voice mode was only available on Claude Haiku, Anthropic's faster but less powerful model. Now, the company is making its Opus and Sonnet models accessible in voice mode, thereby broadening its use in applications like Gmail, Slack, and Canva.
When voice mode was launched last year, Anthropic primarily focused on providing quick answers to questions with minimal delay. However, in a blog post, the company noted that users quickly began using voice mode for much more than occasional queries. They were using it to solve "real business problems," which Haiku was not really designed for. This model "allowed for quick conversations, but not always deep ones."
The Sonnet and Opus models are deeper, and the company claims they are "designed to solve complex problems." They can provide more elaborate answers and analyses, then act on your behalf. For example, they can turn a conversation into a one-page pitch or rearrange your appointments if your train is delayed.
Users can switch from text mode to voice mode during a conversation, as well as change models. So, if a quick discussion with Haiku sparks an idea, you can explore it more deeply by seamlessly switching to Opus. Anthropic is also expanding voice mode to several new languages. Until now, languages other than English were only available in beta, but voice mode is now accessible in French, German, Spanish, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Portuguese.
Correction from July 23: This article originally stated that voice mode was launched in 2026; it was launched in 2025.
