Cloudflare Reduces Workforce Despite Record Revenues
Cloudflare recently announced a significant reduction in its workforce, cutting approximately 1,100 positions, or 20% of its staff. This decision was revealed during the release of the financial results for the first quarter of 2026. It marks the first time in 16 years of the company's existence that it has implemented layoffs of this magnitude.
Cloudflare's CEO, Matthew Prince, clarified that this workforce reduction affects all departments and regions, except for sales teams with revenue targets. This announcement comes as the company reported quarterly revenues of $639.8 million, representing a 34% increase compared to the previous year, thus setting a historical record for the company. However, this prosperous period was also marked by a loss of $62 million, compared to a loss of $53.2 million in the previous quarter.
A Paradox of Growth and Losses
Despite impressive revenue growth, Cloudflare continues to face financial losses. This paradox highlights the challenges the company faces in achieving sustainable profitability. Nevertheless, the loss represents a smaller portion of revenue, and several positive indicators accompany this quarter. For instance, Cloudflare reported over $2.5 billion in "remaining performance obligations," a key metric that has grown by 34% compared to the previous year. These obligations represent contracted revenue that has not yet been realized.
AI as a Driver of Transformation
Matthew Prince emphasized that these layoffs were not aimed at cost-cutting but were rather a direct consequence of integrating AI into the company's operations. "Today's actions are not a cost-cutting exercise or an evaluation of individual performance; they are about defining how Cloudflare operates and creates value as a world-class, high-growth company in the age of agentic AI," he explained in a blog post.
Although Cloudflare has sold AI-based products, the company initially took a cautious approach regarding its own use of AI. However, a turning point was reached last November, when massive productivity gains were observed, with some employees becoming up to one hundred times more productive. Prince compared this transformation to moving from a manual screwdriver to an electric screwdriver.
Massive Adoption of AI at Cloudflare
The use of AI at Cloudflare has exploded, increasing by over 600% in the last three months. Prince indicated that the entire research and development team is now using Cloudflare's Workers platform, which allows developers to create and run software on the company's global network. Additionally, 100% of the code produced and deployed is now reviewed by autonomous AI agents.
The impact of AI is not limited to developers. Employees across all departments, from engineering to human resources, finance, and marketing, are using AI agents to accomplish their daily tasks. This widespread adoption of AI has reduced the need for support staff, according to Prince.
Future Outlook
Despite these workforce reductions, Prince stated that Cloudflare will continue to hire and invest in talent, as those who adopt these AI tools are significantly more productive. He expressed confidence that by 2027, Cloudflare will have more employees than at any point in 2026.
Cloudflare ended its first quarter with approximately 5,500 employees before the layoffs. The model of Cloudflare, which combines strong revenue growth with a justified reduction in staff due to AI gains, is becoming increasingly common in the tech sector. It remains to be seen whether this reflects a genuine structural transformation or if it is merely a cost management strategy.
During a conference call, an analyst questioned Prince about the necessity of cutting so many positions after such a strong quarter. Prince responded, "Just because you are fit doesn’t mean you can’t become fitter."
