OpenAI has recently integrated Codex into the ChatGPT mobile app, allowing users to remotely control their computers from iOS and Android devices. This feature transforms the smartphone into a true remote control while leaving the execution of tasks on the local machine.
Features of Codex on Smartphone
With this update, Codex can now interact with various applications, input text, generate images, and remember preferences to allow users to pick up their work where they left off. To connect to an ongoing session, simply scan a QR code with your phone. The app offers the ability to track different projects, approve commands, modify templates, or launch new tasks.
Security and Functionality
User files, credentials, and settings remain stored on the machine where Codex is running. The smartphone primarily serves as a supervisory interface. OpenAI emphasizes the importance of security by implementing a “secure relay layer” that protects user devices while synchronizing the session state.
Availability and Deployment
The deployment of Codex mobile has begun on iOS and Android in regions where the ChatGPT app is already available. This feature will be accessible on all plans, including free and Go subscriptions, after the app update. However, the most advanced features for direct computer control are not available in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland.
This advancement marks a turning point for Codex, evolving beyond simple software development to become a true work assistant on the computer.
