Google Introduces Enhanced Personalization in Its AI Summaries
Google's Preferred Sources feature, which allows users to customize their searches by highlighting their favorite news sites, is now integrated into AI Summaries and AI Mode. This update aims to make search results more relevant and aligned with users' personal preferences.
Origin and Development of Preferred Sources
Introduced last year as an experimental project within Google Labs, the Preferred Sources feature initially aimed to allow users to select their favorite sites for traditional searches, the Discover mode, and Top Stories in Google News. With this recent expansion, the feature now extends to AI-powered searches, offering even deeper personalization.
How the Feature Works and Its Benefits
With this integration, users can add their preferred sites to appear more prominently in AI search results. Google explained in a blog post that this feature makes it easier to access content from sources that users have already chosen. Preferred sites will be clearly labeled, just like in Top Stories, to stand out in the results.
Google stated: "Our Preferred Sources feature makes it easier to see more content from your favorite websites. And starting today, it arrives in AI Summaries and AI Mode, allowing you to easily spot links in AI responses from the sources you have already selected."
Process for Adding Preferred Sources
To customize their searches, users need to log into their Google account and access the source preferences page. By typing the name or address of the desired site, such as ZDNET, they can select and add the site to their preferences list. During searches, these sites may appear in AI Summaries, provided the topic is relevant to their content.
It is important to note that preferred sources will not always display. The search topic must be relevant to an article published by the selected site. Additionally, Google favors sources that publish fresh content so that users receive the latest information.
Other Features and Improvements
In addition to this personalization, Google is introducing a carousel of thumbnails for developing news topics, highlighting preferred sources. Users can scroll through these thumbnails and choose the article they wish to read based on the details provided.
A "Highly Cited" badge will also be visible next to frequently cited articles, helping users identify the most influential sources. This tag highlights articles that have been cited by other sources, allowing users to find those receiving the most coverage.
These innovations aim to enhance user trust by showcasing reliable sources and firsthand perspectives while continuing to innovate to deliver the best of the web. Google is committed to connecting users with the most relevant and up-to-date content, valuing trusted content creators and publishers.
