Google and AI: A New Era for Heart Health in Rural Australia

Google is partnering with leading health organizations in Australia to introduce artificial intelligence tools in regional communities. This project aims to identify heart health risks early, thereby making proactive care accessible to more people.

Australia is recognized for having one of the best healthcare systems in the world. However, place of residence remains a determining factor in health outcomes. People living in remote communities are 60% more likely to die from heart disease than those residing in metropolitan areas.

It is in this context that Google is teaming up with some of Australia's top health organizations to launch a new program. By combining Google's artificial intelligence with community-based care, the goal is to transform the way support is provided to those who need it most.

A Collaboration for Preventive and Proactive Care

This initiative, a first for the Asia-Pacific region, is being conducted in partnership with Wesfarmers Health and its company SISU Health, the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, as well as the non-profit private health insurer Latrobe Health Services.

Supported by a AUD 1 million investment from Google Australia's Digital Future Initiative (DFI), this collaboration utilizes Google's Public Health AI (PHAI). Currently in the proof-of-concept phase for selected partners, PHAI acts as an advanced analytics engine that helps identify hidden health risks within communities. The aim is to equip partners with insights that could help them shift from treating problems to proactively managing chronic disease risks.

Understanding Health Holistically Through AI

Health is not limited to doctor visits; it is influenced by our environment, proximity to care, access to fresh food, air quality, and more. To capture this complexity, PHAI uses Google's Population Dynamics Models (PDFM), along with other key datasets such as air quality, pollen, and location information that help establish connections.

By analyzing diverse, de-identified, and aggregated datasets—ranging from clinical records to geographical factors—the model uncovers hidden patterns at the community level while protecting individual privacy. This enables health organizations to move beyond a "one-size-fits-all" approach, tailoring interventions to the specific needs of a postal code or city.

Targeted Screenings Where They Are Most Needed

This technology promises concrete actions. Supported by the DFI, SISU Health plans to conduct over 50,000 new health screenings in remote areas. SISU Health will also use PHAI to analyze trends through its unique dataset of de-identified and consented records. By combining this data with the new screenings—all with user consent—we can better understand local health challenges and propose tailored interventions.

Towards a Future Without Barriers

The goal of this initiative is simple: to promote health wherever people live. By combining Google's AI capabilities with the deep clinical expertise of our partners, we are working towards a future where every Australian has access to the personalized care they deserve.
