The Promises and Limits of AI in Product Design
Myth #1: Ready-to-Use Products in the Blink of an Eye
The idea that artificial intelligence tools can create production-ready products in record time is widely held. In reality, while these tools can generate initial drafts very quickly, these preliminary versions are far from market-ready. AI-designed interfaces often lack deep consideration of user experience (UX). They tend to overly simplify workflows, ignore specific product constraints, and compromise consistency across different screens. Thus, while AI can reduce prototyping costs, it does not replace the need for thorough product thinking.
Myth #2: The Supremacy of Formulation
Another persistent myth is that formulation, meaning the art of using specific words and phrases to maximize the effectiveness of AI tools, is the most crucial skill. In reality, the design of the system as a whole is far more decisive. AI tools are advancing and becoming increasingly capable of understanding the designer's intent, thereby reducing the importance of precisely phrasing commands. However, it remains essential to design a coherent overall system to fully leverage the capabilities of AI.
