A Constant Evolution in Design
For two decades, the design sector has undergone continuous transformation, reinventing itself every two years. Trends have shifted from skeuomorphic design, which mimics physical objects, to sleek and fluid mobile web interfaces. This evolution has been marked by "app-ification" and the development of data-rich ecosystems, particularly in the realm of AI startups in Silicon Valley.
Technological products have also followed this dynamic, transitioning from mobile phones and tablets to smartwatches, AR/VR devices, foldable phones, and personal assistants. AI, whether wearable or agentic, has integrated into these developments, illustrating a constant and predictable change.
Towards a Human-AI Design
Design has adapted to these changing contexts in various ways: HCI, information architecture, web and GUI design, product design, systems thinking, and now AI and model design. Today, we stand on the brink of a major architectural shift in our careers.
We are moving away from traditional interfaces—those glass panels and buttons that allowed us to control machines. The future is leaning towards the definition and design of Human-AI systems. This change is not just about tools and processes; it fundamentally alters the way products are designed and used.
