Microsoft Commits to Health AI with Copilot Health

Microsoft recently unveiled Copilot Health, a service that marks its entry into the health AI sector, alongside giants like OpenAI and Anthropic. This new tool is integrated into Microsoft’s Copilot assistant and stands out for its ability to centralize health data from over 50 wearable devices, such as Apple Health, Oura, and Fitbit. Additionally, it aggregates information from more than 50,000 hospitals and healthcare facilities across the United States, as well as laboratory results.

The goal of Copilot Health is to analyze this data to provide personalized health recommendations to users. Microsoft emphasizes that this tool is not intended to replace a doctor, but rather to prepare patients for their medical consultations.

Data Security and Privacy

The responses provided by Copilot Health rely on verified sources from 50 countries, supplemented by content from Harvard Health. Users have the option to search for doctors who accept their insurance, with filters for specialty, location, and language. Regarding security, health data is stored in an encrypted manner and is not used for training AI models. Users can disconnect data sources and delete their information at any time.

The development of Copilot Health is supported by an internal clinical team and over 230 doctors across 24 countries. The service has received ISO/IEC 42001 certification, which is an international standard for AI management systems.

A Strategic Launch in the United States

Copilot Health is initially launched in the United States, available in English only, for adults on a waiting list. Microsoft aims to develop a "medical superintelligence" that could combine the general knowledge of a primary care physician with the expertise of a specialist. A research project, MAI-DxO, is already showing promising results in research environments.

Competition with OpenAI and Anthropic

Meanwhile, OpenAI and Anthropic have also launched their own chat services dedicated to medical topics. OpenAI has indicated that 260 doctors from 60 countries are participating in the development of its service, a figure close to that of Microsoft, suggesting a possible collaboration. Although Microsoft has not specified which model powers Copilot Health, it is likely that OpenAI's models are being utilized.

In May 2025, OpenAI published a study showing that its models, o3 and GPT-4.1, outperformed doctors in certain simulated conversations with patients, particularly in helping to diagnose rare conditions.
