Spotify, the giant of music streaming, recently announced a strategic partnership with Universal Music Group to integrate artificial intelligence into music creation. This collaboration aims to allow users to legally generate covers and remixes of tracks from affiliated artists, using advanced AI technologies.
Although the launch date for this feature has yet to be specified, it will be offered as an add-on to the Spotify Premium subscription, involving an additional cost for users. This initiative is part of Spotify's strategy to provide a legal framework for modifying copyright-protected titles while increasing revenue for participating artists.
Alex Norström, co-CEO of Spotify, emphasized the importance of this approach by stating that the project is based on the consent and compensation of the artists and songwriters involved. Thus, this feature could serve as an additional revenue source for creators, alongside traditional streams.
In October, Spotify had already mentioned agreements with the music industry regarding AI, referencing other labels in this announcement.
Towards an expansion with other labels
For now, the number of tracks compatible with this new feature has not yet been determined. However, the partnership with Universal Music Group may only be a first step. Spotify has expressed its ambition to collaborate with other major players in the music industry, such as Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, Merlin, and Believe.
The stated goal is to develop responsible AI products that allow artists and songwriters to connect more closely with their fans while ensuring additional revenue.
AI, an ally for artists?
While artificial intelligence is often perceived as a threat to creators, Spotify seeks to reposition it as an innovative tool to strengthen the bonds between artists and fans. Generative music AIs are becoming more sophisticated, with players like ElevenLabs and Google developing models capable of creating music with lyrics.
Google has developed Lyria, an AI model capable of generating music with lyrics, already available on Gemini. With this new agreement, Spotify hopes not only to enrich the user experience but also to offer artists new monetization opportunities.
