Daniel Moreno-Gama is at the center of a legal case after being accused of traveling from Texas to California with the intent to kill Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI. On April 10, he was arrested for throwing a Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman's home and attempting to break into OpenAI's headquarters.
According to prosecutors, Moreno-Gama tried to break the glass doors of OpenAI's headquarters with a chair, claiming he wanted to set the building on fire and kill anyone inside. The charges against him include "attempted damage and destruction of property by explosive means" and "possession of an unregistered firearm." These charges can carry maximum sentences of 20 and 10 years in prison, respectively.
Upon his arrest, San Francisco police officers discovered that Moreno-Gama possessed incendiary devices, a can of kerosene, and a lighter. They also found a document titled "Your Last Warning," which advocates opposition to AI and incites murder as well as other crimes against the CEOs of AI companies and their investors.
Document Details
The document is divided into several parts. The first, titled "Your Last Warning," contains a statement from Moreno-Gama claiming to have "killed/tried to kill" a person designated as Victim-1. He adds: "If I am going to incite others to kill and commit crimes, I must lead by example and prove that I am fully sincere in my message."
The second part, "A Few Words on Our Imminent Extinction," addresses the alleged risk that AI poses to humanity. Finally, the third part is a letter addressed to Victim-1, beginning with "To [Victim-1's name] if you survive," where Moreno-Gama writes: "If by some miracle you live, then I would take that as a divine sign to redeem you…".
