Dario Amodei, at the helm of the artificial intelligence company Anthropic, adopts a management approach that is garnering interest in the business world. Founded just over five years ago, Anthropic is already valued at around one trillion dollars by private market investors, reflecting its meteoric growth.
In an interview with Emily Chang from Bloomberg, Dario Amodei shared a surprising aspect of his management style: he has only one direct report, his chief of staff. This setup allows Amodei to free himself from the constraints of daily team management, a luxury that few leaders can afford.
All other members of Anthropic's executive team report to his sister, Daniela Amodei, co-founder and president of the company. Daniela is responsible for daily operations, which enables Dario to focus on strategic aspects such as company culture, research direction, and in-depth exploration of the future of civilization, complete with detailed essays and footnotes.
This management structure is particularly atypical in the tech sector. For instance, Sam Altman of OpenAI manages about half a dozen direct reports, while Jensen Huang of Nvidia oversees dozens. Amodei's method, though rare, provides him with considerable freedom to dedicate himself to ambitious research projects, an advantage he describes as "incredibly liberating." This approach highlights an innovative way of leading in a constantly evolving sector.
