Dave Eggers Accuses ChatGPT of Severely Harming Education
Author Dave Eggers told OpenAI staff that ChatGPT is "silencing an entire generation." During an invitation from Sam Altman to give a talk to about 200 OpenAI employees, Eggers took the opportunity to criticize the company.
According to the Financial Times, Eggers stated:
"The effect of ChatGPT on the lives of educators is catastrophic. Whether you intended it or not, you have made the lives of every teacher infinitely more difficult than they were two years ago. So, let that sink in... If students use it to compose, which is the greatest tragedy of all, they will never learn to write. And their voice is stolen from them. They will never have the ability to tell their truth and share their own story. And this silences a generation or two."
To be fair, Altman likely knew what to expect. Eggers' bestselling novel, The Circle, is a scathing critique of the tech industry. He has also referred to AI-generated writing as "nonsense pastiche."
