Debian Approves AI with Mandatory Human Review

The Debian project now allows the use of artificial intelligence tools for code, maintenance, and documentation. Contributors remain fully responsible and must review, test, and, if necessary, modify any AI-assisted output. Disclosure of AI usage is encouraged but not mandated, a stance that has sparked criticism, including the declared departure of one contributor.
Unchanged Responsibility and Required Human Review
All contributions to Debian, regardless of the tool used to produce them, must meet the same standards of quality, correctness, maintainability, and legal compliance. Accepting or uploading AI-generated content without human review does not align with the established development practices of the project. Contributors must understand, review, test, and, if necessary, modify any AI-assisted output before integrating it. The use of a generative AI tool does not reduce the contributor's responsibility for the submitted work. Debian does not require contributors to disclose the use of AI but encourages transparency on the matter.

A Vote Opens the Use of AI Tools in Debian
Debian voted to allow developers to use AI tools in their contributions, whether for development, maintenance, or documentation. The project will therefore not ban code generated by AI tools. The policy specifies that generative AI is not subject to any specific rules beyond the standards already expected of contributors. It also acknowledges that responsible use of AI can enhance developers' productivity. Prior to this vote, several other proposals were considered, some of which aimed to prohibit contributions made with the help of AI tools.
Critical Reactions and Precedent at Ubuntu
Some users and contributors of Debian are not satisfied with the new AI policy. One contributor announced that they were leaving the project and were no longer interested in anything from Debian. Earlier this year, Canonical, the publisher of Ubuntu, also faced similar backlash regarding its own position on AI.
