Decagon, an innovative startup in the field of AI-powered customer support, has just completed its first public offering. This operation allows its more than 300 employees to sell a portion of their shares, based on an impressive valuation of $4.5 billion.
The secondary sale orchestrated for Decagon employees, a company that is not yet three years old, is led by the same investors who recently participated in its Series D funding. This funding, amounting to $250 million, was concluded less than two months ago with major players such as Coatue, Index, a16z, Definition, Forerunner, and Ribbit.
In a context where competition for AI talent is intensifying, many fast-growing startups are adopting this liquidity strategy to attract and retain top-tier employees. Allowing employees to convert a portion of their equity into cash has become a favored method for retaining talent.
Companies like ElevenLabs, Linear, and Clay have also recently organized similar public offerings for their employees, with some even conducting two operations in just nine months. These initiatives are made possible by investors' appetite to increase their stakes in these high-growth potential companies.
Jesse Zhang, CEO and co-founder of Decagon, told TechCrunch: “We had the opportunity to align recent investment demand with growth milestones while rewarding the hard work of the team.”
Although Decagon has not disclosed its revenue figures since the end of 2024, when its annual recurring revenue exceeded $10 million, the current valuation of $4.5 billion reflects ongoing growth. This valuation represents a tripling from the $1.5 billion announced in June.
Decagon stands out by developing AI "concierge" agents designed for large enterprises. These agents are capable of autonomously handling customer requests via chat, email, and voice. Among its more than 100 major clients are names such as Avis Budget Group, 1-800-Flowers, Quince, Oura Health, and Away Travel.
While other companies like Sierra, Intercom, and Parloa are also developing AI agents to automate traditionally human customer support, the market remains vast. According to Gartner, there are 17 million contact center agents worldwide, a workforce that these companies are looking to automate.
