Mozilla recently revealed how the use of the Claude Mythos preview has strengthened the security of Firefox. With this technology, the company has been able to identify and fix an impressive number of vulnerabilities in its browser.
The Evolution of Bug Reports
Not long ago, bug reports generated by artificial intelligence for open-source projects were often considered unreliable. These reports, while plausible, were frequently incorrect, placing a burden on developers who had to verify them. However, this situation has radically changed due to two key factors: significant improvements in language models and the refinement of techniques to effectively leverage them.
Long-standing Bugs Finally Resolved
Among the identified vulnerabilities were a 20-year-old XSLT bug and another in the <legend> element dating back 15 years. These discoveries were made possible by the advancements in models that now allow for the generation of detailed and accurate bug descriptions.
Enhanced Security
By 2025, Mozilla was typically fixing between 20 and 30 security bugs per month. However, in April, this number surged to 423, demonstrating the effectiveness of using Claude Mythos. Additionally, many attempts by the tool were blocked by the existing defense-in-depth measures already in place in Firefox, showcasing the browser's robustness against potential threats.
