Niteshift: A New Vision for AI Coding
The AI coding startup Niteshift recently raised $7 million in a seed funding round led by Jerry Chen of Greylock. While this amount is relatively modest by current AI standards, Niteshift has managed to attract notable investors such as Reid Hoffman, Olivier Pomel of Datadog, Alexis Lê-Quôc, Ankur Goyal of Braintrust, and Misha Laskin of Reflection AI.
Founded by Sajid Mehmood and Conor Branagan, two former engineers from Datadog, Niteshift is tackling a saturated market with a bold proposition. The startup questions the trust placed in major model creators like OpenAI and Anthropic. According to Niteshift, these companies are "constantly killing" startups by launching competing applications, posing a risk to businesses that entrust them with their most sensitive assets.
A Strategy Inspired by Datadog's Experience
Sajid Mehmood, CEO of Niteshift, compares the current situation to that of Datadog in its early days. At that time, Datadog successfully attracted e-commerce clients who were hesitant to rely on Amazon Web Services, fearing the impact of Amazon on retail—a situation often referred to as the "retail apocalypse."
Mehmood sees a similar dynamic emerging in the AI space, where companies like Anthropic and OpenAI are rapidly expanding into vertical software markets. This trend, dubbed the "SaaSpocalypse," is driving businesses to seek solutions that decouple the coding model from the infrastructure necessary to ensure the verification and maintenance of AI-generated code.
A Flexible and Independent Platform
Niteshift does not aim to replace popular coding agents like Claude Code or Codex but rather to reduce dependency on them. Niteshift's platform allows for easy switching from GPT to other cloud models, depending on the specific needs of each project. "Being able to switch from GPT to cloud models is important," said Mehmood, "everyone is worried about being crushed by these giants."
Jerry Chen of Greylock was convinced by this approach. He believes that as major AI labs ascend the value chain, there is an opportunity to offer clients an alternative path by disassembling their agents from the infrastructure on which they operate. Niteshift is building the platform that enables this for coding agents, allowing clients to invest deeply in their development tools without locking themselves into a single model or agent provider.
An Infrastructure-Based Business Model
Unlike other players in the market, Niteshift does not sell tokens. It charges for its services as a cloud provider, with usage rates billed by the minute. This approach allows clients to enjoy increased flexibility without being locked into a single model or provider.
A Competitive Market
Niteshift enters a market already well-occupied by players like Cursor, Cognition, Amazon Bedrock, and OpenRouter. These competitors have a significant head start, with impressive funding and valuations. For instance, Cognition recently raised $1 billion at a valuation of $26 billion.
However, Mehmood is betting on the experience of Niteshift's founding team. Having already overcome similar challenges at Datadog, the team is well-positioned to build infrastructure capable of managing the complexities of AI-generated code at scale. Teams need to execute, test, and verify software autonomously in their true production environments, and they require infrastructure built by people who have done it at scale.
Niteshift stands out for its ability to offer an alternative to companies looking to avoid lock-in by AI giants. By focusing on the independence and flexibility of development tools, Niteshift hopes to convince businesses of the value of its unique approach.
