The new technology from NVIDIA, DLSS 5, has yet to win over gamers en masse. A survey conducted by TechPowerUp gathered over 20,000 responses, revealing that 58% of participants do not want AI to alter video game content. Although the survey is not statistically reliable, it provides insight into gamers' opinions.
DLSS 5 and its AI in Turmoil
Two months ago, at the GTC in San Jose, California, NVIDIA unveiled the next version of its Deep Learning Super Sampling, DLSS 5. This technology promises to revolutionize the gaming industry by adopting a significantly different approach from its predecessors. NVIDIA is now focusing on neural rendering and generative artificial intelligence to enhance video game graphics.
NVIDIA illustrated this new approach with several examples of real-time neural rendering, aiming to apply "photorealistic lighting and materials to pixels." According to NVIDIA, DLSS 5 enables developers to achieve a level of photorealistic graphics that was previously reserved for Hollywood visual effects. The AI model is trained to understand the complex semantics of scenes, including characters, hair, fabrics, and skin, as well as ambient lighting conditions, all from analyzing a single image. With this understanding, DLSS 5 generates accurate images while preserving the structure of the original scene.
8% Are Already Convinced
Despite these promises, NVIDIA's presentation has elicited mixed reactions among gamers. Some have expressed doubts, prompting NVIDIA to respond. Jensen Huang, the CEO of NVIDIA, stated that "gamers who complain are completely wrong." He clarified that DLSS 5 merges mastery of geometry, textures, and all aspects of the game with generative AI, while remaining under the direct control of the developer, which distinguishes it from traditional generative AI.
However, the TechPowerUp survey shows that 58% of participants believe that "intelligence should not alter video games at all," preferring that AI leaves games intact, without intervention, whether in terms of lighting or photorealism. Conversely, 28% of voters are more indecisive and prefer to "wait and see the concrete results in upcoming games," positioning themselves as skeptics.
Only 8% of voters are already convinced of the visual benefits of DLSS 5, considering the rendering to be better than native. Additionally, 6% of participants are willing to accept DLSS, but only to improve animation speed, focusing on performance.
These results, while revealing, should be interpreted with caution, especially since the questions posed are not clearly defined. Despite the years and versions of DLSS, 58% of the votes indicate a significant rejection of the technology. A similar study among game developers and publishers could provide further clarity.
