DLSS 5 Arrives on September 3 with Limited Support and High Requirements

Nvidia activates DLSS 5 on the RTX 50 series and via GeForce Now, but NBA 2K27 remains the only compatible title at launch. The company mentions fine-tuning for studios and more realistic rendering, at the cost of an estimated performance loss of between 50 and 60% and strict hardware requirements.
Estimated 50–60% Loss and Strict Hardware Requirements
Nvidia estimates that DLSS 5 results in a performance drop of between 50 and 60%. For NBA 2K27, the company states that a single RTX 5060 is sufficient to play at 1080p with ray tracing and DLSS 5 on ultra settings, provided that one of the fastest gaming processors is used and the 6x image generation is activated. This mode means that only one "real" image is calculated for every six displayed images. The initial demonstrations of the technology required two RTX 5090s.
Initial Compatibility Limited to NBA 2K27
At launch, NBA 2K27 is the only game announced as compatible, with a release scheduled for September 3 at 9 PM PT on PC. DLSS 5 will be available on desktop and laptop RTX 50 GPUs, as well as via GeForce Now. Nvidia has not responded to questions regarding support beyond NBA 2K27 and has not confirmed the continuation of support in previously mentioned titles. Resident Evil Requiem, EA Sports FC, Starfield, and Hogwarts Legacy do not support DLSS 5 at this stage, and the final rendering in these games remains undetermined. The rollout of DLSS 5 is expected on September 3, following an announcement made earlier this year.

Nvidia's Promises and Flexibility for Studios
Nvidia presents DLSS 5 as its biggest graphical advancement since 2018, leveraging AI to enhance rendering from source content and increase perceived realism. The company highlights extensive controls for developers, aimed at determining how changes appear in-game. According to demonstrations, developers have numerous sliders to calibrate the extent of modifications and emphasize specific elements, with the option to leave faces intact and focus enhancements on scene objects like dishes, food, or vegetation.
Critiques of Early Demos and First Impressions
The initial examples released have faced sharp criticism for marked alterations to characters, illustrated by the transformation of Grace Ashcroft in Resident Evil Requiem. During a briefing dedicated to NBA 2K27, the perceived changes seemed less pronounced, with shadows and textures generally making players appear more realistic. A test of an unofficial mod in Shadow of the Tomb Raider showed a performance drop of about half. So far, the presentations have primarily showcased ideal cases and the promotion of NBA 2K27; no official version has yet been directly tested by the mentioned observers. However, an unofficial version has been tried on older titles like Control and Skyrim, where measured use already seems to produce notable effects.
