The Israeli start-up DustPhotonics, founded in 2017, is at the center of a potential operation that could reach several hundred million dollars. Leading companies like Intel, Nvidia, and Amazon are vying to acquire this firm specializing in photonic chips. These chips are crucial for improving data exchanges in artificial intelligence infrastructures, a sector where current systems are showing their limitations.
DustPhotonics has established itself as a key player in the field of optical interconnections thanks to its photonic chips. These chips enable data transmission speeds ranging from 400 Gbit/s to 1.6 Tbit/s, using light to carry information. This approach reduces latency and energy consumption, surpassing traditional electrical interconnections. With the increasing complexity of AI models and data volumes, copper cables are reaching their physical limits, making silicon photonics indispensable.
A Technology Serving AI
Current infrastructures for artificial intelligence are showing their limits, and DustPhotonics offers an innovative solution with its photonic chips. These chips, capable of transmitting data at speeds from 400 Gbit/s to 1.6 Tbit/s, use light to transport information, distinguishing them from traditional electrical interconnections. This technology reduces both latency and energy consumption, thus meeting the growing needs of AI clusters.
Bottlenecks in AI infrastructures are no longer solely found in GPUs or memory, but in the very flow of information between components. Silicon photonics thus emerges as an essential solution, allowing for the direct integration of optical components into chips and thereby enhancing the overall performance of data centers.
A Strategic Repositioning
Initially focused on transceivers and cables, DustPhotonics pivoted in 2021 to concentrate on chip development. This strategic shift, led by CEO Ronnen Lovinger, has allowed the company to increase its value within the technology chain. Supported by over $100 million in investments, the start-up also benefits from the experience of its chairman, Avigdor Willenz, who previously orchestrated the sale of Habana Labs to Intel and Annapurna Labs to AWS.
The Interest of Tech Giants
For companies like Nvidia, investing in photonics is essential to ensure a stable supply chain and reduce dependence on external suppliers. Nvidia has ramped up investments in this area, committing several billion dollars to suppliers like Coherent. Acquiring DustPhotonics would allow for the internalization of key technologies, optimizing the integration of computing, networking, and interconnection. Amazon could also incorporate these innovations into its cloud infrastructures, while Intel seeks to strengthen its position against Nvidia in the AI sector.
DustPhotonics is not alone in this rapidly evolving market. Other start-ups are also developing innovative solutions for optical interconnections, such as Ayar Labs and Xscape Photonics, although their technological approaches differ.
A Booming Market
Major industrial players are seeing their valuations soar. Lumentum and Coherent are experiencing spectacular growth, driven by the increasing demand for photonic components. A similar trend is observed with Tower Semiconductor, whose valuation has significantly progressed in 2026.
Photonics is becoming an essential pillar of AI infrastructure, alongside GPUs and HBM memory. An acquisition of DustPhotonics would not necessarily mean a retreat into proprietary technologies. Players like Microsoft, Nvidia, and Meta are also supporting initiatives that standardize optical interconnections, notably through the OCI (Optical Compute Interconnect) consortium.
This dual approach (vertical integration and interoperability) helps secure critical technologies. It also avoids confinement within closed ecosystems, thus offering more flexibility to customers.
