Tesla Bets on AI to Boost Employment

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, recently announced ambitious plans to increase the company's workforce, relying on advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics. During the Abundance Summit, he specified that improving productivity through robotics would not only maintain but also increase employee numbers.

This statement came after entrepreneur Peter Diamandis asked Musk when he expected robots to build other robots. Musk asserted that there would be no layoffs at Tesla, emphasizing that production per employee would reach "incredibly high" levels.

A Contrasting Trend in the Industry

While companies like Atlassian and Block are announcing staff reductions of 10% and 40%, respectively, citing AI as a primary factor, Tesla stands out for its commitment to increasing its workforce. Atlassian, for instance, has opted to reduce its staff while investing in AI to transform its workforce.

The Bet on Optimus and Universal Basic Income

Tesla is heavily betting on Optimus, a humanoid robot, to transform industrial production. Elon Musk has often mentioned the idea that robotics could eliminate the need for human jobs, but he also supports the concept of universal basic income. At the summit, he stated, "We will essentially just distribute money to people, as the production of goods and services will far exceed the monetary supply, leading to actual deflation."

Automakers, including Tesla, are investing in humanoid robots to replace manufacturing jobs. Daniel Diez, the commercial director of Agility Robotics, noted that companies are looking to fill labor gaps for repetitive physical tasks through robotics.

A Tesla spokesperson did not respond to requests for comments on these developments.
